Jurying and Judging FAQs:

Why is Art Kauai called a juried art exhibition?

A juried exhibition is one in which the artworks are chosen for exhibition by a juror, usually someone of renown and experience in the art world.

Why does KSA sponsor a juried art exhibition?

Juried shows are an accepted part of the professional art world and, ideally, a juried show is a cohesive, consistently high-quality exhibition. Limited exhibition space can also make jurying a necessity. In addition, the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts will only visit fully juried shows to purchase for their Art in Public Places collection. Art Kauai is currently the only art exhibit held on Kauai at which Kauai artists can be considered for the state art collection.

How are Jurors chosen?

Suggestions for jurors come from the KSA board, KSA members, and others in the community. Jurors are chosen, usually from off-island, based on their credentials, experience, availability, and appropriateness for a given exhibit. Jurors are made aware of KSA's purpose and goals, the community of artists KSA serves, and the nature of the exhibit involved. KSA hopes jurors will be as inclusive as possible, while still preserving the integrity of their choices and vision for an exhibit.

What awards will be given?

Cash and gift certificate awards donated by generous individuals, businesses, and KSA will be presented. Usually a certain number of Honorable Mentions are also given. Awards can range in value (usually from $50 to $200), but KSA does not recognize "Best in Show" or First, Second, Third Place, etc. The KSA Invitation Award is given to the artwork chosen to be the invitation image for next year's exhibit, and is always given to a new artist each exhibition.

How are artworks and awards chosen?

Artworks and awards are chosen solely at the juror's discretion based on criteria which may include technical skill, creative use of materials, composition, presentation, and other more subjective qualities such as originality, personal vision, or sense of humor. Award donors do not choose or stipulate what kind of work is to be awarded, and KSA allows no participating artists in contact with the juror during jurying and award selection. Juror assistants during this stage must be nonparticipating volunteers.

Why have any judging at all?

While long discussion could be waged over the value of judging in the arts, it is a generally accepted way of recognizing excellence in our culture. The artist must realize, however, that this highly subjective process is not the final indicator of quality or value in art. The artist's self-confidence, belief in their own artistic expression, and persistence will play an important role in their success. It should be noted that in addition to Art Kauai, KSA sponsors at least two other exhibitions during the year that are either open, with all work exhibited, or semi-juried, with at least one piece accepted per artist, thus providing a range of opportunities for all KSA members.

Are entry fees for unaccepted works refundable?

No, entry fees for unaccepted works are not refundable, and go to support the exhibition and the community effort that the show reflects.

Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Acquisition Awards

(Excerpted from SFCA guidelines) The SFCA Acquisition Award Selection Committee visits exhibitions to recommend works for the Art in Public Places (APP) Collection. Museums, galleries, and arts organizations must meet certain criteria including maintaining an annual exhibition schedule and following an established procedure in which works of art are selected by a visual arts professional. Juried exhibitions should be open to the widest possible segment of artists and should reflect a high level of professionalism in the visual arts field.

Artworks are recommended for the APP Collection based on:

  • Quality: high aesthetic value, craftsmanship, and originality.
  • Style & Nature: appropriate in material, form, and content for display in State buildings.
  • Significance: important to the visual arts of Hawaii.
  • Permanence: structurally sound, good physical condition, low maintenance.
  • Portability: light enough to be transported by a few people.
  • Price: appropriate within current market.

Three suggestions from past KSA jurors:

Although KSA has invited a wide range of arts professionals to jury KSA shows, there have been recurring comments made by jurors during critiques and exhibit "walk and talks" including:

1. Submitting to juried shows regularly is important, while keeping in mind it's a highly subjective process.

2. Artists shouldn't second-guess jurors or submit what they think the juror will like. Artists should always submit the best work they feel they are doing.

3. Finally, probably the single most-repeated comment from jurors has been on the importance of presentation. Quality framing and presentation that does not compete or distract from the art is critical to a work's success. A clean, professional presentation (or lack thereof) can often mean the difference between a work being juried in or out.
