SMALL WORKS SHOW - HOLIDAY 2008-2009

The KSA Small Works Show opened with a reception on Friday, December 12 and enjoyed an extended display through February 13, 2009.

All current KSA members were eligible to enter up to 5 works in any media, none larger than 16 inches in any dimension (height, width, or depth, including frame, stand, etc).

The juror for this year's exhibit exhibit, Maile Andrade, chose 193 works by 82 artists for the show from the over 230 entries. She also chose the works to be recognized with awards, which were presented at the opening reception on the evening of December 12.

On Saturday, December 13, Maile Andrade gave a lecture presentation on Native Hawaiian Visual Culture examining the role of the artist in the context of the history and contemporary cultural practices of the indigenous peoples of Hawai'i through key Native Hawaiian cultural concepts.

Mahalo to all who braved the elements that weekend to attend the opening reception and lecture.

The Small Works Show was sponsored by KSA with support from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Hawaii State legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. AWARDS:

The Paul Yardley Award ($150) in memory from the Yardley family to Leslie Hagen for "Balancing the Budget."

The Rena Selfe Award ($100) in memory from Robin and Ned Selfe to Kathleen Adair Brown for "Cousin Elizabeth Tudor."

The KIUC Award ($100) from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative to Kathleen Ho for "Koae' Kea."

The Kauai Society of Artists Award ($100) to Les Ventura for "Norfolk Pine Bowl."

The "Wunderlust Button" Award ($75) from Sally French to Valentino Petrusich for "Basalt."

The Banana Patch Studio Award ($50) from owner Joanna Carolan to Michelle Dick for "Repose."

The Michelle Morey Award ($50) in memory from the Bodine and Morey families to Sean Laakso for "Hanalei Pier."

The Art Framers Partners Award ($50) in services from owners Ron Oda and Jon Tom to Katherine Gabet for "DASH."

The Kauai Frame Award ($50) in services from owners Frank and Joyce Schuierer to Devi Town for "Koi #1."

The KSA Invitation Award from the Kauai Society of Artists to Leslie Hagen for Balancing the Budget (work to be featured on next year's invitation postcard).

About the Juror:

Maile Andrade

Maile Andrade is an Associate Professor and Graduate Chair at Kamakakukalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa developing and teaching in a Native Hawaiian Visual Culture Program.

Maile is a native of Makaha, O'ahu, whose family roots (Hanakahi) are in Kalama'ula, Molokai, Kohala, Hawai'i and Hanapepe, Kaua'i.

After raising a family on Kaua'i, Maile attended Kaua'i Community College and went on to receive a BA in Art at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo in 1989. She is a multi-media artist and has a Masters of Fine Art degree in Ceramics/Fiber from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa in 1993.

Maile has received a variety of academic awards including the UH-Hilo Chancellor's Achievement Scholarship, the American Association of University Women-Hilo Scholarship and the UH-Hilo Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient. She was selected by the Folk Arts Apprentice Program to serve as an apprentice with Master Weaver Elizabeth Lee in 1989 and received the 1998 Visual Arts Fellowship from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Maile has participated in the Indigenous Weavers Symposium in 1993, the Indigenous Contemporary Visual Artist Symposium in 1995 held in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Te Ra Artfest in Gisborne, NZ and the Native Visual Arts Gathering at the Longhouse in Evergreen State College, Washington in 2001. Maile was artist-in-residency in Aotearoa, New Zealand in an exchange program, Toi O'ahu, and at the Alaska Heritage Center through Bishop Museum in 2006. She serves as a Researcher in collections at the Bishop Museum were she is working with the kapa collection.

Maile has exhibited her works locally, nationally and internationally at the Wailoa Art Center, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Bishop Museum, Indigenous Weavers' Show, Auckland; Indigenous Contemporary Visual Artist Exhibition in Rotorua, New Zealand; Native American Artists in Fairbanks, Seattle, New York City and Santa Fe, East/West Center Gallery, and at the Linden Museum in Germany, Museum of Design in New York and IAIA, Santa Fe, NM.

She is presently (2008) curating an exhibition at Bishop Museum.
